Dirty God by Johnnie Moore
I love reading. This time of year I begin thinking about books I've read throughout the year as well as books that I would like to read in the year to come. I recently read Johnnie Moore's book "Dirty God" and wanted to share a little about it with you. Johnnie Moore was the campus pastor and a professor at Liberty while Jeremy and I attended and I always loved hearing him preach the Gospel. He always seemed to make Scripture come alive and help to build background knowledge while connecting Scripture to our lives today. This book carries that same style. Johnnie Moore presents Jesus in a tangible way. Although fully God, Jesus was also fully man and lived among the people. He was real, He was willing to leave His place of authority in Heaven to come to earth and "get dirty".
Moore explains the magnitude of this sacrifice and how because of His sacrifice we are offered a grace unmatched by any other. The reader is also challenged to "get dirty", make sacrifices, and experience God's grace through serving others in ways that may not be the "neatest" of circumstances. I would recommend this book if you are looking for something to challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and recognize the true sacrifice that Chris made in coming to earth. One of my favorite quotes from the book is:
"God got his hands dirty so that we could have our hearts cleaned". Powerful!
* I was provided a copy of Johnnie's Moore's book "Dirty God" by Booksneeze.com in exchange for a review of this title. All opinions are my own.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com® <http://BookSneeze.com> book review bloggers program. Books to Read in 2013
I always like to start in January with a list of books to read in the coming year. (See my list for 2011 and 2012).
2012 has brought many many changes in our lives. Life happened and I just didn't get to read all of my 2012 reading list. You know, starting grad school, becoming a teacher, and getting pregnant took up a lot of time :).
This year, I know that I'll have issues making time with a new baby arriving, more grad school, and continuing teaching. I'm trying to be more realistic with my reading goal. I don't like not meeting goals, so I'll only have 6 books on my list for this year. I think that will be manageable and realistic for this season of life.
1. Loving the Little Years
2. The Ministry of Motherhood
3. Shepherding a Child's Heart
4. What to Expect When Your Expecting
5. Margin
6. A fiction book that I've yet to decide on :)
These are the books that I successfully read in 2012-
1. Made to Crave
2. Women Reaching Women
3. The Money Saving Mom's Budget
4. Total Money Makeover (Re-read sections that we are currently working at on our journey towards becoming debt free)
5. The Hunger Games
6. Catching Fire
7. Mockingjay
Reading Now- (All re-reads)
1. The Family
2. A Wife After God's Own Heart
3. A Lineage of Grace
Compare to my to-read list for 2012

Reading Goals Update
12 Books in 2012
I think it is important to evaluate your goals and progress. This time of year is perfect to do that- we are half way through the year, and it's like a little check up. I like to make yearly goals for reading books, etc. And I wanted to give you an update on my reading goals for the year. Here is what I've read so far this year:
Made to Crave by Lisa Terkeurst
Women Reaching Women by Chris Adams
The Money Saving Mom's Budget by Crystal Pain
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
The MockingJay by Suzanne Collins
Here were my goals for 2012:
January- Spiritual Disciples for the Christian Life by Donald Whitney
February- Made to Crave by Lisa Terkeurst
March- Women Reaching Women by Chris Adams
April- Margin by Richard Swensen
May- Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day
June- Grace for the Good Girl by Emily Freeman
July- Sun Stand Still by Steven Furtick
August- Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas
September- Knowledge of the Holy AW Tozer
October- Transformed Lives: Taking Women’s Ministry to the Next Level by Chris Adams
November- The Money Saving Mom’s Budget by Crystal Paine
December- One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp
Continuing Reads throughout the Year:
Jesus Calling
Home Comforts
I have not done very well with keeping on track for what books to read each month, however I'm glad that I have read at least one book for each month this year, even if they weren't originally on my list. One reason is I don't want to buy some of the books that are not available at our local library. I've signed up for them on Paperback Swap, but haven't received them yet.
Currently I'm reading Marvelously Made by Monica Rose Brennan. Monica was the director of the Women's Ministry program at Liberty University and I took many classes with her. It is so awesome that she has a book now!
I'm also wanting to read the book Radical by David Platt. We are going to the beach in a few weeks, so hopefully I can read it while we are there.
What about you- what have you been reading lately?

Unsettle Me
Sometimes we just need to be unsettled by God. Unsettled with where we are. Unsettled with our complacency and compromises.
These words impacted me today and I hope that in some way they will you as well,
"Yes, indeed, unsettle me Lord.
Unearth that remnant of unforgiveness.
Shake loose that justification for compromise.
Reveal that broken shard of pride.
Expose that tendency to distrust.
Unsettle me in the best kind of way. For when I allow Your touch to reach the deepest parts of me- dark and dingy and hidden away too long- suddenly, a fresh wind of life twists and twirls and dances through my soul.
I can delight in forgiveness and love more deeply.
I can discover a discipline that lies beyond what I'm capable of and grab hold of God's strength to bridge the gap.
I can recognize the beautify of humility and crave the intimacy with God it unleashes.
I can rest assured through harsh winds blow, I will be held.
Goodbye to my remnants, my rationalizations, shards, and tendencies. This is not who I am nor who I was created to be.
Goodbye to shallow love, sharp words, self-pity, and suspicious fears. I am an unsettled woman who no longer wishes to take part in your distractions or destructions.
Welcome deeper love, new possibilities, unleashed intimacy, and the certainty I am held.
Welcome to the unsettled heart."

Free Books
I came across these wonderful books on prayer the other day by Andrew Case. He has graciously provided them free to download on his website.
These books are practical and Biblical guides to praying Scripture for your husband, wife, or children.
Water of the Word is a prayer book for husbands to help them intercede for their wives, Prayers of an Excellent Wife is a prayer book for wives to help them intercede for their husbands, and Setting Their Hope in God is a prayer book for parents to help them intercede for their children.
I have started using "Prayers of an Excellent Wife" in my prayer times, and I love it! It really helps you to focus on praying daily for your spouse (or in my case fiancé), and comes straight from the pages of Scripture. Download your own here.
Here is an example of a prayer from "Prayers of an Excellent Wife" based on Nehemiah 9
"Sovereign Preserver,
Let my dear husband stand up and bless You our
God from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be
Your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and
praise. You are the LORD, You alone. You have made him.
You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all
their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all
that is in them; and You preserve all of them; and the hostof heaven worships You.
Thank You for preserving my husband, for keeping him
as Your chosen, for directing his steps on the narrow way.
Please continue to preserve his life! For You are the LORD, the
God who chose him and brought him out of darkness and
made his heart faithful before You. Thank You that You have
kept the promises that are his in Christ Jesus, for You are
righteous. I praise You that You are a God ready to forgive,
gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in
steadfast love, and have not departed from him. Even when
he strays and his heart grows dull, You in Your great mercies
have not forsaken him. Therefore, keep on making a name for
Yourself through him, and instruct him with Your good
Spirit. Amen (Nehemiah 9)."

Lessons fom Ruth Bell Graham- Part 2
Yesterday I shared some lessons from "It's My Turn" by Ruth Bell Graham, the wife of Billy Graham. Today I wanted to finish sharing some quotes from the book that really stood out to me. Hopefully they will encourage and challenge you as well.
"After my first date with Bill, I knelt and said, 'If You let me share his life, I'll consider it the greatest privilege in the world'."
"Don't feel greedy if you want him home all the time (likely as not, you won't have him all the time). And don't feel guilty if on occasion you're glad to see him go. He's probably secretly glad too. Not for keeps, you understand- just for a breather. It's what Kahlil Gibran refers to when he says, 'Let there be spaces in your togetherness.'
"Every mother should have at least one Christmas baby. It makes one feel very close to Mary."
"Self indulgence is doing what we want rather than what we ought. I had always thought of self-control applying to temper or to drink. But what about the almonds in the pantry, the ice cream and chocolate sauce, the candy which I know will add unnecessary pounds and make my face break out? What about controlling my tongue? My tone of voice? Standing up straight? Writing letters? All these and many more need controlling."
"If only God will enable me to tend to the possible, depending on Him for the impossible"
"The home should be a place of quiet peacefulness. This responsibility falls squarely on the mother's shoulders. Uncomfortably, whenever Proverbs speaks of nagging, it is the woman to whom Solomon is referring. There is no way around it. The woman creates the atmosphere of the home."
"Perhaps it could also be said, 'A good mother is one who makes it easy for a child to be good'".
"I have but one desire for Bill, for our children, and for myself, that we be men and women of God. I lie awake nights loathing myself for the person I am, fearful and worried that I cannot bring up this family as I should. And I can't. I am a weak, lazy, indifferent character casual where I should be concerned, concerned where I should be carefree; self indulgent, hypocritical, begging God to help me when I am hardly willing to lift a finger for myself; quarrelsome where I should be silent, silent where I should be outspoken; vacillating, easily distracted and sidetracked... All that I am not, He is; all that I am and should not be, He forgives and covers."
"Never let a single day pass without saying an encouraging word to each child. Particularly wherever you have noticed any- even the slightest- improvement on some weak point. Some point at which you have been picking and criticizing. And never fail to pass on any nice thing you have heard said about anyone, to that child."
"Quit studying the problems and start studying the promises"
"I learned that worship and worry cannot live in the same heart. They are mutually exclusive"
"I have started many a day with [the] simple prayer, 'Lord, what can I do to help You today?"
"For me, spiritual dryness usually follows an extremely busy period. air must be still for dew to fall, and I was anything but still"
"It could be merely a piece of plywood stretched cross two sawhorses. But have a special place for Bible study that doesn't have to be shared with sewing or letter writing or the paying of bills."
"When we were in school, we always kept a notebook handy to take notes on the professor's lecture. How much more important is it to take notes when God is teaching us"
"If a busy housewife has to clear off a spot for Bible study during a crowded day, she is likely to put it off. But if she has a place where he Bible is always open and handy, whenever there is a lull in the storm she can grab a cup of coffee and sit down for a few minutes or more of pure refreshment and companionship"
"Buildings fall into decay and eventually disappear. The transformed life goes on forever."

Lessons fom Ruth Bell Graham- Part 1
For Christmas I received a copy of "It's My Turn" by Ruth Bell Graham, evangelist Billy Graham's wife. It is a great easy read and is full of practical wisdom and advice for wives and mothers. For my own benefit as much as yours, I am going to share some of the bits and pieces that I highlighted when reading it. There is so much to share that I'll break it up into two posts.
I know there is a lot, but there is so much to learn from this amazing woman of God. As Jeremy is applying to youth pastor positions, I've been thinking a lot about being the wife of a man in ministry and what that will mean for our family. It will be an amazing privilege to serve along side him, but I know that there will be challenges. Who better to learn from about marriage, ministry, and family than the wife of Billy Graham?
"You have heard from one who has had generous portion of the earth for his parish. You are about to hear from one who had their home and their five children for hers. The size of the parish is immaterial. But the message and the goals have been essentially the same."
"I have learned much from others. But I have learned the most from an old, eternally contemporary Book and its Author."
"Daddy and Mother were of the strong opinion that life is a battleground and that home life and schooling should be the training ground"
"If God could be reached only through intellect, then where would the brain damaged, the mentally retarded, and the little child"
"True scholarship and deep love for God frequently going hand in hand"
"Gently, tactfully, persistently, I tried to suggest and then to persuade Bill that perhaps he, too, should go to Tibet as a missionary. It was obvious that I was doing the calling, not God. Weeks passed. Finally Bill turned to me: 'Do you believe that God brought us together? I did-unquestionably. 'In that case,' Bill said firmly, 'God will lead me and you will do the following.' And I have been following ever since."
"When two people agree on everything, one of them is unnecessary."
"It is good to know how to disagree and when [with your husband]. Here are a few suggestions out of my own experience: First, define the issue (and make sure it is worth disagreeing over); next, watch your tone of voice and be courteous (don't interrupt, and avoid rude, unkind, or unnecessarily personal remarks); third, stick to the subject; fourth, stick to facts; and fifth, concede graciously. As for when to have a disagreement, this takes both sensitivity and ingenuity on the part of the wife as well as the husband. For one thing, it is not wise to disagree with a man when he is tired, hungry, worried, ill preoccupied, or pressured. Nor does it pay to argue with your husband unless you are looking your very best. And avoid arguing when you are boiling mad over some issue."
"Adapting to our husbands never implies the annihilation of our creativity, rather the blossoming of it"
"Young husbands seldom mean to be cruel, but being new at the business of marriage, and unable to see things the way new brides do, they can be thoughtless"
"A happy marriage is the union of two good forgivers. And after the forgiving comes laughter, a deeper love- and further opportunities to forgive"
"A woman assumes the household responsibilities to free her husband for his"
"Pity the married couple who expect too much from one another"
"It is a foolish woman who expects her husband to be to her that which only Jesus Christ Himself can be: always ready to forgive, totally understanding, unendingly patient, invariably tender and loving, unfailing in every area, anticipating every need, and making more than adequate provision. Such expectations put a man under impossible strain."
"God created us to be a 'help meet' for our husbands...Since every man is different, needs will vary. So it is up to the wife to study her own husband to discover how she ca best meet those needs. And she is to adapt herself to him. Now, this takes skill and imagination. It keeps a woman feminine."
"Too often, early love is a mirage built on daydreams. love deepens with understanding, and varying viewpoints expand and challenge one another. So many things things improve with age. So it is with marriage. Those who abandon ship the first time it enters storm misses the calm beyond. And the rougher the storms weathered together, the deeper and stronger real love grows."

2011 Reading List
Do you enjoy reading? There is something about books that just makes me want to grab them in my arms and soak up all the knowledge they hold.
Books inspire. Books encourage. Books can make us cry. Books can help lead us to the throne of God. I have a deep love for written words, for the lives they represent, for the stories they tell, and for how they have impacted my life.
One of my goals for the new year is to finish reading my "To read before getting married" book list. There are still lots of books on the list, considering I've only finished a couple off it so far. Mostly because I've recently been reading fiction books a lot.
Below is my list of books that I intend to read before we get married. These books are tools to help me prepare to be an understanding, loving, faithful, and godly wife and homemaker for Jeremy. I've highlighted the ones I've already read. Most of these books I've at least read parts of before
1. Becoming a Woman who Pleases God by Pat Enis and Lisa Tatlock (A great book by a wonderful professor at The Master's College in California. I e-mailed her a few times regarding my senior honors thesis on "The Biblical Role of Women in the Home". She graciously e-mailed me back and was so kind and personable!)
2. Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerichs (I've read bits and pieces before- love what I've read and heard about it. Jeremy and I are using this in our premarital counseling)
3. His Needs, Her Needs by Willard Harley
4. Saving Your Marriage before it Starts by Les and Leslie Parrot (I've read this once for a class at Liberty, but I'm currently reading it again.)
5. Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
6. Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey
7. The Family by Dorothy Patterson (One of my all time favorite books! I highly recommend it)
8. Fearlessly Feminne by Jani Ortlund
9. The House that Cleans Itself by Mindy Stuart Clark
10. It's My Turn by Ruth Bell Graham (I just finished this book in a couple of hours- easy read full of wisdom from Billy Graham's wife)
11. Letters from Ruth's Attic by Ruth Bell Graham
12.Sheet Music by Dr. Kevin Leman (thanks to Aliesha for the recommedation!)
Some additional books that I would like to read in 2011 are...
1. Knowledge of the Holy by AW Tozer
2. Mere Christianity by CS Lewis (this book has been on m bookshelf since high school- how have I not read it yet?)
3. A Chance to Die by Elisabeth Elliot
4. 5 Star Living on a 3 Star Budget by Feinburg
5. Handbook for Minister's Wives by Dorothy K. Patterson
6. Margin by Richard Swenson (recommended to me by one of my favorite professors from college. She said this was a must read for anyone in ministry or mothers. It deals with time management)
7. The Excellant Wife by Martha Peace (Aliesha recommended this one as well on her blog. I've had this book for at least six months, I got it free with an Amazon card from Swagbucks. I just haven't gotten around to reading it)
Do you have any suggestions for me to add to either list?

Although I love reading books, I always want The Bible to be the Book I read the most.
As Ruth Graham said, "We need to spend less time reading about the Bible and spend more time studying the Bible. Then we need to apply what we learn- carefully and vigorously- to our lives, to live out daily what we have taken in."

Sons of Encouragement
Francine Rivers is by far one of my favorite fiction authors. She has written the popular Redeeming Love (which if you haven't read you need to, it is amazing!), The Last Sin Eater, and tons more books.
Besides Redeeming Love my favorites are the Lineage of Grace series and the Sons of Encouragement series. These books are historical fiction about men and women in Scripture. Rivers has a way of bringing these men and women and their situations to life like you've never experienced. The Lineage of Grace series is about the 5 women in the lineage of Jesus. It is eye opening to read about their lives and to put yourself in their position, and to experience what they could have felt emotionally. I highly recommend these books to you!
The Sons of Encouragement series is about men of faith who served in the shadow of others- Aaron, Caleb, Jonathan, Amos, and Silas. I am currently reading this series for the first time and have read "The Priest" about Aaron and am currently reading "The Warrior" about Caleb. In the same manner as the Lineage of Grace series, Rivers sets the scene of Scripture in such a vivid way and brings to life the characters on the pages of Scripture.
Have you ever thought about the possibility that Aaron was jealous of Moses? After all, Aaron was the older brother and yet his younger brother grew up in the Egyptian palace while Aaron was a slave of the Pharaoh. It would have undoubtedly been difficult at times for Aaron to understand it all and to accept God's plan. The sacrifices and the humble heart Aaron must of had to cultivate are amazing when you REALLY think about their situation.
The theme of this series is that God used these men in a more "quiet" way than others, but they changed history through their obedience to God. I have learned so much reading these books and hope that you will take the time to read them as well!

Cheap Treasures
I was browsing Craigslist the other day and stumbled upon an antique sled for sale for $15! I love pretty much all things antique but I have always wanted one of these sleds to decorate with for Christmas.
My mom uses my dad's sled from when he was little to decorate outside our garage. She puts a Christmas swag on it with a ribbon and I have always thought it just looked so good and festive!
So when I saw this one, I just had to have it. $15 is a pretty good deal I thought!

or this...

Oh course, mine is rusty and not red anymore but I like that better because I don't like red. :)
While I was out in Madison Heights picking up the sled (about a 15 min drive from Lynchburg) I decided to check out their Goodwill. The Goodwill is really big there, it use to be a RiteAid or something. I found the book "Lies Women Believe" for .75! I have wanted this book for a while but it is always like $10-15, so I just never have bought it. I love Goodwill and their books!

So now we have an antique sled that I will decorate with next Christmas wherever Jeremy and I may be living. :)
I'm thinking something like this....
